1. Top sheet: the top sheet makes direct contact with the wearer’s skin and directs the liquid rapidly toward the absorbent core. Additives, such as lotion or aloe, are sometimes included on the top sheet for skin health. The top sheet also plays a role in preventing liquid from coming back up to wet the skin, hence reducing risk of rewet.
2. Acquisition distribution layer (ADL) : Located beneath the top sheet, the ADL helps rapidly direct the liquid toward the core and distribute the liquid across the whole core area to maximize core utilization. It can also act as a barrier to avoid rewet.
3. Super absorbent polymer (SAP): A generally synthetic polymer powder capable of retaining large volumes of fluid relative to weight, even under pressure.
4. Fluff: Blended with superabsorbent polymer (SAP). as part of the core matrix, fluff ensures rapid liquid absorption. It also helps to prevent core cracking and slumping.
5. Core wrap: the containment for the fluff and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) to prevent the leakage of SAP and avoid fibre or powder contamination. Either tissue or non-woven wraps are typically used.
6. Fluff Pulp and SAP Absorbent core: The innermost layer of a disposable diaper that is typically composed of fluff and super-absorbent polymer (SAP) to soak up liquid after insult and store it while the diaper is being worn.
7. SAP Paper Absorbent core: This core uses a layer of synthetic, fluffy nonwoven coupled with SAP powder. The combination is wrapped around the top and bottom with tissue, nonwoven fabric or airlaid paper. SAP paper core is much thinner and comfortable to wear.
8. Backsheet: A barrier film, impervious to liquids, positioned on the outside of an absorbent article. It can be breathable or non-breathable, typically made of polyethylene, often laminated with a nonwoven for extra softness.
9. Adhesive: Synthetic material used to assemble multiple layers or substrates together. In the specific case of a core system, the adhesive is used throughout the different layers to promote core integrity by bonding components together.
10. Wetness indicator: A functionaladhesive and a common feature in many disposable diapers. When the wetness indicator makes contact with liquid after insult, it visually indicates that the diaper pad is wet and the product needs changing.
